Tara Lowry Feb 27, Propelled by an obsession of anything romantic or cute and encouraged by savvy marketers, a large number of Koreans observe at least twelve unofficial couple-based holidays a year. Anniversaries, birthdays, and other special occasions are recorded into the brand new journals. South Korea is full of stationery shops that specialize in quirky notebooks and agendas, often covered with Konglish phrases. One of my students gave me a diary with the words Yo! Miss Syringe on the front. Some also celebrate this day as Candle Day and give and receive decorative candles. Only the women give gifts; men are off the hook in February. Some follow the custom that the man should give a gift approximately three times the worth of what he received a month prior.
Korean Culture and Sense of Shame
South Korea Table of Contents Filial piety hyo in Korean; xiao in Chinese , the second of the Five Relationships, defined by Mencius as affection between father and son, traditionally has been the normative foundation of Korean family life. Though its influence has diminished over time, this relationship remains vitally important in contemporary South Korea. Entailing a large number of reciprocal duties and responsibilities between the generations of a single family, it generally has been viewed as an unequal relationship in which the son owed the father unquestioning obedience.
Neo-Confucianists thought that the subordination of son to father was the expression, on the human level, of an immutable law of the Cosmos. This law also imposed a rigidity on family life.
Korean, Chinese, or Japanese are the hottest but I don’t really prefer South East Asians like Filipinos etc. This title is a little bit misleading, most people when referring to Asians refer to North East Asians, not South .
Balhae and Silla , CE The oldest surviving metal movable type book, the Jikji , was printed in , and Goryeo created the world’s first metal-based movable type in Gija Joseon was purportedly founded in the 12th century BC, but its existence and role have been controversial in the modern era. Three of the commanderies fell or retreated westward within a few decades.
As Lelang commandery was destroyed and rebuilt around this time, the place gradually moved toward Liadong. Goguryeo, the largest and most powerful among them, was a highly militaristic state, and competed with various Chinese dynasties during its years of history. Goguryeo experienced a golden age under Gwanggaeto the Great and his son Jangsu , who both subdued Baekje and Silla during their times, achieving a brief unification of the Three Kingdoms of Korea and becoming the most dominant power on the Korean Peninsula.
Balhae was founded by a Goguryeo general and formed as a successor state to Goguryeo. Relationships between Korea and China remained relatively peaceful during this time. Later Silla carried on the maritime prowess of Baekje , which acted like the Phoenicia of medieval East Asia , and during the 8th and 9th centuries dominated the seas of East Asia and the trade between China, Korea and Japan, most notably during the time of Jang Bogo ; in addition, Silla people made overseas communities in China on the Shandong Peninsula and the mouth of the Yangtze River.
Goryeo was never conquered by the Mongols, but exhausted after three decades of fighting, the Korean court sent its crown prince to the Yuan capital to swear allegiance to Kublai Khan , who accepted, and married one of his daughters to the Korean crown prince. During this period, the two nations became intertwined as all subsequent Korean kings married Mongol princesses, [ ] and the last empress of the Yuan dynasty was a Korean princess. However, in , General Yi Seong-gye , who had been ordered to attack China, turned his army around and staged a coup.
Yi Seong-gye declared the new name of Korea as “Joseon” in reference to Gojoseon, and moved the capital to Hanseong one of the old names of Seoul.

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, usually known as North Korea, is a state that occupies the northern half of the Korean peninsula. For much of its short history, North Korea was regarded as a Soviet satellite state. With the fall of the Soviet Union in , however, North Korea’s unique socialism has stood out in the post-Cold War world. Little is known about North Korea in the United States, or in the world for that matter; except for the rare but striking news story about its international terrorism, the nuclear arms threat, and the devastating famine of recent years, nothing substantial is known about North Korea.
This is due to the nation’s strict closed-country policy: Widely regarded as one of the few Stalinist regimes persisting into the post-Cold War era, North Korea—along with its culture, history, and society, and the daily lives of its residents—is hidden behind iron curtains. So little is known about North Korea that the country is often demonized in the Western media.
This is in a stark contrast to South Korea, from which millions have emigrated to the United States, forming a substantial Korean American population. South Korea and North Korea share a half-century history of confrontation and antagonism, often involving bloodshed, as manifested in the Korean War of Nevertheless, South and North Korea stem from one nation. North Korea shares borders with China and Russia to the north and the military demarcation line with South Korea in the south.

Cultural differences and bewilderment from both sides seemed inevitable. I was eager to learn about his culture, not only to know what to expect but, more importantly, to leave a good impression when I meet his friends and family. I browsed and read about Korean culture and customs. I was also learning from him, observing everything he did, trying to separate what was his personality and what his culture. I got more confident as I felt I have mastered the basics. We would both knowingly smile.
An Overlooked Gem: The South Korea Bucket List. If we’re being brutally honest, South Korea probably isn’t at the top of your Asian itinerary.
The bulk of ‘mixed’ marriages are between Korean men and foreign women, but there are also many Korean women marrying men from other countries. The circumstances of the marriages tend to differ depending on the gender of the Korean spouse. By country, China formed the largest group of foreign wives with some 52, , including ethnic Korean Chinese. Vietnam came next with 20, , followed by the Philippines with 7, , Japan with 5, and Taiwan with 2, Foreign brides have also come from Mongolia, Thailand and Russia.
Consequently, the unions face serious challenges. Part of the problem faced by many is that their rights are limited in Korea. Until very recently, they could not complain about their husbands or leave an abusive situation, because they would have to leave the country, probably without their children. The number of mixed marriages having mushroomed in the last few years, the government was unprepared and protections for foreign spouses have lagged behind their increased presence.
Protections have been enacted so enable the women to stay in the country and keep their children if they leave their husbands. As a means of reducing future problems, the government is setting up programs for men who are thinking of marrying a foreign woman through a collaboration between the Ministry of Gender Equality and the Ministry of Justice. Dating Customs Around the World
With so many celebrities tying the knot these days, you might be wondering what wedding customs are like in Korea. This also means that engagement rings are not so common here. Some of the younger generation are starting to pick up the custom, staging a romantic proposal after the agreement has been made. But the woman may or may not wear the ring after the wedding, and both parties may opt to skip the wedding rings entirely.
This again is a generational thing — older Koreans tend not to have wedding rings at all.

When you arrive in a foreign country like this for the first time, it is only natural to expect some culture shock, and I can say that I did.. I think that was true, but looking back now after nearly 7 months here I can say that many things really are different, and would be shocking to most. One of the first things many Korean people ask when meeting someone is: Because the older people get more respect in so many aspects of life, and the younger people are always lesser than them.
We can sort of relate to this concept back home, with respecting our elders and all, but I have a good example of how much different it really is: Park is a good and experienced teacher, with great English skills.
