Each year, at the close of the school year, I like to reflect back on things that worked in the previous year. This year, as many of you know, I changed grade levels from first grade back to Kindergarten.
What can students do in Math Stations? Students can complete independent work, partner activities, or group work in stations. You can find many activities in the Math File Cabinet that work great for stations if you add directions. Math Stations for Middle Grades has dozens of activity ideas and math games to use in stations, and each activity includes student-friendly directions.

Despite its apparent simplicity, there are a huge number of patterns the pieces can be arranged into.
This site has a Printable Tangram Puzzle for you to download and cut out. Good for grades kindy to 4 Dice of Destiny is two games in one! There’s a simple game Dice War for kindy or pre-K kids to learn counting, and the much more complicated battle game that it morphed into when I was play-testing Dice War with my pre-teen, not pre-K son. All you need is some dice and for the complex game for older kids a pack of ordinary playing cards.

Good for grades kindy to 7 Kindy Bingo has some printable 3×3 bingo cards, suitable for kids who know the numbers 1 through Each set of three numbers appears at most once in the set of cards. If you don’t want to have a winner after only three numbers are called out, the web page explains which three numbers can be your first three.

First grade math is all about fun and repeated practice! Well, you know what’s not fun that I clearly need repeated practice with? I am not the best: I should’ve used a fancy app instead of just cramming a bunch of pictures together but since the units in my First Grade Math Units Bundle and First Grade Math Units Bundle are now bundled for seriously crazy savings, I thought I’d share my collagefails with you guys of some of the goodies inside the bundles.

Around the Clock Here is a center game to reinforce clock numeral placement. For each game board, glue a construction paper clock to a colored background. Label each of several chips in sets of 12 chips with numerals 1 – In turn have each player roll a 12 sided die, then cover that number on her clock with the correctly labeled chip. If a player rolls a numeral that has already been covered with a chip, she must pass the die to the next player. Continue play until on numerals on each clock are covered.
Start collecting fry containers. Then write a different number on each box. Make fries by cutting yellow sponges into strips.

After our quick warm up, I begin our whole group lesson. This is where I explicitly teach and model the skill we will be learning! As the teacher, I am the driving force of this portion. This is where I will be as clear as I can when teaching the skill at hand. As the teacher, it is my main job to go group to group to help guide my students. This is where I take many observational notes on which students may need re-teaching or extension of this skill during small groups. My students also know I am available to help answer any questions about the activity and clear up any confusion!
I will often pose guiding questions to my students and try to listen in on their math conversations! This gives me the time to focus on my small groups. This is how I run math tubs: My math tubs are numbered and then I have 4 colored buckets underneath. There are often 2 activities inside each numbered tub correlating to the same skill.
