Putting Advocacy to Work – Try ‘Speed Dating’ in Baltimore

Lower levels are very literal and need time to prep, but my upper levels get a shorter prep time and often use alter-egos instead of their true personality. It makes it hysterical. I set up the room with long tables with girls on one side and boys on the other so they are facing each other. For example, if you have 18 guys and 12 girls, you will need 3 guys to be on the girl side. Here is the super basic form that I used with Spanish I to plan their answers and questions. Random Stories – This is not fancy, but is a wonderful way to get the kids speaking. I divide the students into different groups and give them each a photograph.

Oct 12,  · ‘Speed dating‘ with Trump, Sanders in N.H. Haley Dover, Burlington (Vt.) As a high school civics teacher, Kleitsch wants his sons to cultivate an early interest in politics.

During the second week of class, when not everyone in our tenth grade English class knows each other well, I surprise students with speed dating. Speed dating books, that is. The students walk into our classroom to find the desks grouped into tables, covered with tablecloths, and decorated with centerpieces featuring flowers, candles LED candles , “menus,” and a large stack of books. Not only do students get to know one another better through this activity, but they also learn more about specific genres found in our classroom library and select their first independent reading texts.

At the close of the semester, this activity was rated by students as one of their favorites, so I thought I would share how I set up this activity with my high school students in case others want to give it a try with their students this fall. One of the first questions that I’ve got from other teachers about this activity has to do with the books themselves. How did I select my genres?

Where did I get all my books? So let’s start with the most important aspect of this whole activity – the books. Looking at my classroom library and what my students have been gravitating toward the past few years, I established ” menus ” for each table featuring a different genre. I have seven tables around my room, each featuring a different genre – realistic fiction, historical fiction, dystopian novels, poetry, graphic novels, self-help, and creative nonfiction.

Dec 05,  · Using speed dating is a way of engaging students making learning independent, competitive and explicit. Each class that I have used this with has loved it and it is quick and easy to prepare. The students do all the hard work and have fun at the same time.

Fiona Aubrey-Smith explains Inspired and run by a national group of headteachers, Speed Learning is an innovative way of enabling schools to share professional knowledge about current challenges, strategies and practice. The Speed Learning ethos is fast-paced, freely accessible, and unapologetically focused on classroom impact. As primary head Jane Ratcliffe explained: At Cholsey this was delivered by Russell Prue and gave attendees practical and engaging ideas for bringing innovation to every classroom.

There is an hour-long carousel, with 10 tables, and the hour is divided into six slots of 10 minutes, such that teachers prioritise what they will engage with. This means that both table-host and participant benefit. At Cholsey, colleagues shared mathematical strategies, with Ladygrove Park Primary sharing early years expertise. Other table hosts shared ways for teachers to bring interactive resources into the classroom, and free ways to begin to use school radio to extend collaboration and literacy skills.

Leadership table hosts talked about strategies for monitoring teacher quality, distributed school leadership, and the outcomes of research showing strategies to raise the attainment of White working class boys.

The Teacher Who Believes Math Equals Love

Whether the student has behavioral issues or is having serious academic problems, the teacher must have the finesse of a diplomat to tactfully but clearly communicate the situation to the parents. Every teacher also knows that sinking feeling when the conference has not gone as hoped. There are several strategies, however, that can help make conferences successful.

First, keep your eyes on the goal.

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think that I would meet the love of my life in a speed dating event. The speed dating scene has always been terrifying for me. The idea of having to put myself out there and meeting people made me feel nervous and afraid of those awkward moments. There were no awkward silences or uncomfortable moments like in other singles events, and I felt relaxed and comfortable as soon as I walked in the door. I liked the idea of being in a dance class with lots of students because I knew that it would be a chance to meet more than 20 guys at a time, make new friends, and possibly find a good match.

The class was run by very experienced instructors who led us through the steps and gave us time to practice with all the recently met gentlemen in the class. I got the chance to dance with each one more than once, which gave me the opportunity to know a bit more about them. The class was fun, and we were organised in a circle where we rotated partners.

It was truly an amazing social experience.

Sometimes the biggest turn-offs during the sales process are the unconscious mannerisms that sales people display without even realizing it! I have my 28 students in my Strategic Selling class sit on both sides of their tables facing a partner. Now, North facing students move one chair to your right! Students then pull out a watch or cell phone anything with a timing device will do.

It’s a bit like speed dating, only there’s less chance of a happy ending. At my daughter’s school you’re allocated five minutes per teacher and a bell goes when your time is up.
