Every year, the department hosts CEE Research Speed Dating Day to encourage community members to think outside the box and to draw inspiration from the research of their peers. From developing low-cost sulfur dioxide sensors to creating environmentally friendly human-made materials, the seventh annual event showcased the recent findings and ongoing projects of 50 community members. Undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, research scientists, and faculty members shared their research through talks and electronic poster sessions. Cohen and Saavedra added a judging element with prizes this year, incorporating a competitive element to the event. Throughout the afternoon, faculty judges gave scores for each presentation and poster, and the winners were announced at the end of the night. CEE Research Speed Dating Day was established to provide inspiration and a new perspective that could fuel others’ projects.

Board Matching As an intern with the Research Triangle Foundation, I am fortunate to be able to attend many of the events that the Foundation puts on. During my first week in the position, I went through the calendar of events on our website and chose which ones I would like to participate in. As a recent transplant from Minnesota, I was looking for a way to get involved in the local community.
I spent 6 years in Minneapolis mentoring some pretty amazing kids, and I perhaps somewhat selfishly wanted to find a similar opportunity here in the Triangle. What specifically interested Jemison in promoting this event is the fact that it provides an incentive for young professionals to get involved in community service.
Because board membership stands out on a resume, individuals are able to make a difference while also advancing their careers.

I feel like middle school is one of those key times in life where many students either take the path to become a life-long reader…or not. I pulled books that I frequently recommend from 7 different genres and put them in boxes at each of my 7 tables. It exposes readers to new genres that they may not seek out on their own. I set a timer like the one projected on the screen for five minutes. For the first 30 seconds, they can peruse the books in the box at their table and select a book.

January 23, By Susan Lampert Smith Researchers from the Department of Surgery and the School of Education got together last month to weigh the possibilities of research and other collaborations. Ambitious surgeon seeks educator who longs for a research partner. Okay, so there was no adult ad involved, but a campus event in December brought together about 60 faculty members from the UW Department of Surgery and the School of Education to brainstorm about joint projects.
That one resulted in several research partnerships between surgeons and engineers. Carla Pugh , vice chair of education and patient safety in the surgery department, said the drive to improve health care quality explains why surgeons are so interested in the assessment and coaching skills of professional educators. These questions are critical for surgery. There are millions of surgeries in the United States each year, and surgery and caring for surgical patients accounts for about half of the total U.

Controversy[ edit ] Anthropologist Helen Fisher in What happens in the dating world can reflect larger currents within popular culture. For example, when the book The Rules appeared, it touched off media controversy about how men and women should relate to each other, with different positions taken by columnist Maureen Dowd of The New York Times and British writer Kira Cochrane of The Guardian. Sara McCorquodale suggests that women meeting strangers on dates meet initially in busy public places, share details of upcoming dates with friends or family so they know where they’ll be and who they’ll be with, avoid revealing one’s surname or address, and conducting searches on them on the Internet prior to the date.
Don’t leave drinks unattended; have an exit plan if things go badly; and ask a friend to call you on your cell phone an hour into the date to ask how it’s going. If you explain beautifully, a woman does not look to see whether you are handsome or not — but listens more, so you can win her heart. That is why I advise our boys to read stories and watch movies more and to learn more beautiful phrases to tell girls.

Speed Dating Research Update: I need to sit in front of women and talk to them for, I imagine, 3 minutes a piece. I mean mega busy. Properly screwed in the wall-to-wall double-booked-meetings context. That should make the whole affair rather exciting from a geeky mobile perspective. No one will be wielding a phone more than 2 years old tomorrow night. I shall find out. I definitely think it is. However I reckon the taking of photos and video and copiously ignoring your 3-minute partners might not be the most constructive way ahead, so I think I shall post-blog it.

Among them is the objective to create a community who is sharing similar research interests. We have all been to those conferences where you only talk with the person who you are sitting next to during the conference dinner, or with a few researchers during the session breaks.
To prevent this from happening, we are organizing a speed dating session. Speed dating allows participants to shortly talk with many fellow researchers in an informal way about what drives them in doing their research. More about this in format.

Innovation in Information Systems Faculty members teaching the capstone Information Systems project course explored how students could get more — and more useful — peer feedback on their project work. During speed dating sessions, groups paired up, and then individual students representing the two groups paired up to reciprocally present and discuss their progress. Next, groups changed pairings, and the process was repeated.
The hypothesis was that, with speed dating compared to class presentations, students could a provide more feedback on project ideas as well as b provide more helpful feedback and c demonstrate greater participation in class. Students completed brief surveys after each project-sharing session, and a sampling of sessions was observed by a trained researcher. According to the surveys, students reported receiving and giving much more helpful feedback during the speed dating sessions as compared to the presentation sessions.
Students also reported being significantly more engaged during the speed dating sessions. Classroom observations showed greater participation by a broader proportion of students in the speed-dating sessions compared to presentations. Given these positive results, speed dating for project feedback will be used more frequently in this Information Systems course and likely others.
Students reported giving and receiving more feedback, as well as being more engaged, during the speed dating events compared to the normal presentations. More engagement was also observed by a third-party observer during the speed dating compared to the normal presentations.
